Nippers is a fun way for children to make friends, enjoy the beach, get active and learn important water and beach safety skills. Our program is run by club volunteers, with parents playing an important part.
Nippers at a glance
- Who: Children in age groups U6 to U13. Children must be at least five years old to participate.
- When: Saturday afternoons from December to March. Please arrive by 2:45pm for sign-in. U6 and U7 finish at 4:00pm; U8 to U13 finish at 4:30pm.
- What: Beach games, relays, water activities and practical water-safety learning, adjusted for each age group.
- Parents: A parent or guardian must remain on the beach during the session. We encourage parents to get involved and help our volunteer age managers.

How to join Nippers
Both new and returning families need to register for the 2026–27 season. Choose Family & Nipper Membership when you register.
- Before registering: Each adult member needs a valid Working with Children Check, with Sandringham Life Saving Club and Life Saving Victoria listed as organisations. See WWCC instructions.
- Register your family: Use the button below to complete your Family & Nipper registration. This applies to new and returning families.
- Before your child’s first session: Arrange their preliminary swim assessment and return the completed form to the Nippers team. See swim assessment information.
What happens at Nippers?
Children take part in games and races on the sand, team relays, water-safety education and age-appropriate water activities. It’s a great way to build confidence and connect with other local families.
Older Nippers and Cadets
Our U13 Cadet program helps older Nippers develop leadership skills, mentor younger children and prepare for the next stage of surf lifesaving, including the pathway towards patrolling. Cadets may also have opportunities to attend Life Saving Victoria leadership camps.
